In the summer of 1836 Anna Maria Hussey, wife of the Rector of Hayes near Bromley, went on holiday to Dover with her two small children, their nurses and her youngest sister Kate and wrote a lively account of her stay for another sister, Henrietta. The diary opens with a vivid account of the journey, most of which was by sea. Anna Maria relished the voyage, although there was a gale raging and almost everyone else was seasick! Throughout the diary her enjoyment of life and her interest and delight in everything around her is obvious. She was a keen student of natural history, and she and Kate explored the cliffs and surrounding countryside looking for geological and botanical specimens. The diary will appeal to anyone with an interest in women's history, natural history or Dover in the 19th century, as well as anyone who enjoys a good and lively read.
